The following is a press release from P.S. 185:
STUDENTS OF PS 185 DRAW COMMUNITY ATTENTION TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL DANGERS OF PLASTIC LITTER WITH BOTTLE CAP ART MURALS
Bay Ridge, Brooklyn – The students of PS 185′s Go Green Team have been asking a simple question: Where does our trash go? Through their research, they discovered an answer that is both sad and shocking. The trash that is discarded as litter in the street most likely ends up in the ocean. Plastics that float in the ocean are often mistaken by wildlife for food, causing many animal deaths every year and serious damage to the ecosystem. The students of the Go Green Team were determined to educate the PS 185 population about the dangers of trash in the ocean, as well as draw attention to the use of and recycling of household plastics.
After brainstorming various project ideas, Go Green Team members initiated a collection of plastic bottle caps and lids from household products such as soda, juice and milk bottles, as well as coffee and food containers. The caps and lids will then be used in the construction of two large scale, mosaic-type art murals which will be displayed in the school’s main stairwells. The Go Green Team has estimated that students will need to collect as many as 15,000 bottle caps and lids to complete this project. The Go Green Team hopes that this project will help PS 185 students and their families understand how much plastic they are encountering daily, reduce the amount they are using and make an effort to recycle on a regular basis.
Already, the school community is finding success in the project, as the comment of a PS 185 parent revealed, “Until our family started collecting bottle caps for our school mural, we never realized just how much plastic we use every day!” With that message being driven home to the school’s families, Go Green is inviting local Bay Ridge restaurants and our political representatives to join in the collection.
The unveiling of the completed murals will be one of the highlights of PS 185′s Earth Day celebration, which will take place on June 12. The mural itself will be designed and constructed by the entire student body in their art classes, with the assistance of parents, as well as the Go Green Team.
