Beyonce and Andre 3000 of Outkast have teamed up to do a cover of Amy Winehouse’s classic hit, Back To Black ! The song is taken from Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Other songs included in the soundtrack are Florence + The Machine’s Over The Love and Lana Del Rey’s Young And Beautiful.
Now, despite how Beyonce sounds fab as she lends her rich vocals for this cover, the first half sounds terrible! Andre 3000 completely massacred the track with his drawls. In the end, the track sounds completely different from the original. It’s no wonder Winehouse’s father; Mitch Winehouse has called the duet ‘terrible’. Some songs should never be covered and Back To Black is definitely one of them. I mean, Winehouse is one of the best British vocalists I know of, along with Adele. A song like that is certainly hard to cover.
Still, Mark Ronson-the producer who worked with Winehouse- has said that he is flattered and honored. He even went as far as to say that Amy would have been too.
Uh… I don’t think so.
In all honesty, the track would have been so much better without Andre 3000 in it. As amazing as Andre 3000 and Beyonce both are, the late Winehouse is a on a league of her own and she owned this song.
