British soul singer Adele leads the nomination for the 2012 Billboard Music Awards in 18 categories. The ceremony will be aired live on 20 May from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
Adele has received nods for Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist category and more. The lead single 'Rolling in the Deep' from the chartbuster sophomore album '21' has ranked the UK singer as a contender in seven song categories.
Party rockers LMFAO follow the soul singer with 17 nominations. LMFAO and Adele will compete in the Top Hot 100 Artist category also including Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Rihanna.
R&B star Rihanna has received 13 nods whereas Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne each snagged a spot in 10 categories. Adele, Rihanna, Perry, Gaga and Nicki Minaj will also battle for the Top Female Artist while the Top Duo/Group category will be contested by The Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Lady Antebellum, LMFAO and Maroon 5. The Top New Artist category features fresh talents like Bad Meets Evil, Big Sean, Foster the People, Scotty McCreery and Wiz Khalifa.
The awards will reflect Billboard's chart rankings based on fan interactions with music, including album sales and downloads, track downloads, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Vevo, Youtube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music.
The awards will be based on the reporting period of 1 March 2011 to 29 February 2012. In other major categories, Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, Take That, U2 and Roger Waters will compete for the Top Touring Artist award, and The Black Keys, Coldplay, Foster The People, Foo Fighters and Mumford & Sons will fight it out for both the Top Rock Artist and Top Alternative Artist trophies.
Carrie Underwood and Justin Bieber have confirmed performance slots at the Billboard Music Awards.
